Churro Chips at home, one of the easiest and yummiest snacks! If you are like me and occasionally have taco nights…you end up with a bag full of left over tortillas. They stay in my fridge until it expires and gets thrown out. How wasteful! I thought about how I can use these tortillas without throwing them out each time. I was craving churros one day but didn’t feel like making a mess of a churro batter. So I decided to make churro chips with my left over tortillas and they came out great!
INGREDIENTS:
Cinnamon – 1 part
Sugar (granulated) – 3 parts
Left over tortilla (I used corn)
Oil (I used olive oil as it’s generally all I have at home but any oil will work)
DIRECTIONS:
Cut the tortillas into triangles like a pizza and set aside.
Then mix the cinnamon+sugar with a fork in a shallow pan or plate and set aside (depending on how much tortillas you have left, about 1 part cinnamon and 3 parts sugar).
In a medium pot, heat up enough oil until the temperature is about 140 degrees fahrenheit.
Once the oil reaches 140 degrees fahrenheit, drop a few pre-cut tortillas in the oil until golden brown.
*Tip: the chips tend to look a lot lighter in the oil so do not over fry.
Drain the chips of any excess oil and drop into the cinnamon sugar mixture right away.
*Tip: do not wait too long as the chips will dry and the sugar mixture will not stick to the chips as well.
Lightly toss them around with your hands until evenly coated.
Keep repeating until the desired amount is fried and dusted with the cinnamon sugar.
Then you are done! You can eat right away or store in a sealed container for a few days.
Perfect for snacking, parties or just eating with a side of ice-cream for dessert!
Enjoy.
